The process involves making an appointment and providing them with your past employment experiences and education as well as your activities and any related projects. This is a brief of who you are and your interests and accomplishments. Think of it as a menu description at a restaurant. You want to provide a list of what you have to order and the cover letter is the description marketing why should order the dish.
